I don't know the answer, but I think the words are pretty universal.
Looking at my own life long friends, we were all fucked up kids from fucked up homes with no one to depend on but eachother, and nothing to look forward to other than going to shows and getting into trouble.
I don't know where I would be today without their support when I've needed it most.

I think it was written for Dennis, from Dennis' point of view. Mike wrote that song just days after his death. It just makes more sence to me; Dennis saying "Mike, dont take me for granted, I wont always be around". A simple concept for a song when he is grieving.

My impression has always just been that it's one friend to another. I think you could probably make a case for either.

isnt it just a bunch of shit we all like and take for granted...
the little things.. .a pack of smokes- i bet every smoker takes them for granted... worn in leather jacket, if you got one you know what I mean...
everything and anything can be taken for granted and the point of the story realize it before its too late ...

I think maybe you're taking it too literally. It's just a bunch of things from bak in the day that see insignificant. The point is just that when you really care about someone, it's the little, day-to-day stuff that means the most. That's my opinion anyway.

It's friendship talking.
(And that first taste of romance? Shared memories!) The song reminds me so much of my friends and I in high school. We are all still in touch but sometimes we do take each other for granted and forget to keep in touch or get together when we can, or get angry over stupid things, but we can't think of any other people who would understand us the way we all understand each other. I can trust them with anything and I never feel judged.
